MacGyver quenchs the fire for the Challenges Club

Posted in MacGyver on March 19, 2009 by Rockatteer

In November of last year Richard Dean Anderson made a guest appearance to the Quench the Fire Charity run/walk as part of his Purple Heart project for the Pain Center.

As part of an incentive idea, the Quench the fire charity trust had decided to give away 2 tickets to Disneyland in LA to “anyone surpassing the $1,000 mark in fund raising”

As it turned out the Purple Heart project’s fund raising was much more successful that anyone had hoped and went well beyond the $1,000 mark.

But they decided that no-single person could accept the tickets as they where all equally responsible for the success of the project. So as a result of that, they have decided to pass the tickets onto the Challenges Boys and Girls Club in LA.
You will recall that the Challengers club featured in several episodes of MacGyver as his chosen place of volunteer work and with RDA being involved in the Purple Heart project, one can only imagine that he may have had some influence in pointing the tickets in the clubs direction.

MacGyver movie announced

Posted in MacGyver with tags , on March 16, 2009 by Rockatteer

Yep thats right. New Line Cinemas have announced plans for a full length feature film of MacGyver.

Read all about it here

Not really sure how I feel about this. They’ve said that Lee Zlutoff, the original creator of the show, will be a producer, and although no writers or scripts have been mentioned yet, Lee did mention last year that he was working on a script, so one has to wonder if this is the fruition of his script.

I do have some hope knowing that Lee is involved. After all he created the show, but how much influence he has on the way the movie turns out is anyones guess at the moment.

If they follow in the foot steps of National Treasure and Indy Jones, we should get a fairly decent film out of it. And if Lee is involved in the scripting I would guess that he would write something along the lines of the first season action/adventure MacGyver, rather than the later seasons, so that would indicate that we will get something in the genre of National Treasure/Indy Jones.

MacGyver’s Houseboat

Posted in MacGyver on March 6, 2009 by Rockatteer

Got some pretty exciting news for the MacGyver world today.

MacGyver Online has exclusive photos of what MacGyver’s houseboat looks like now.

It’s been renovated inside and painted on the outside but it’s still in Vancouver and still being lived in. There’s lots of information about the houseboat too, so it’s well worth a visit.

Advertising MacGyverisms

Posted in MacGyver with tags on February 7, 2009 by Rockatteer

By now most of you will know about the MacGruber Pepsi ads, which many thought where an SNL skit, but which turned out to be, in fact, fully paid Pepsi commercials.

It was rather fitting that Pepsi choose MacGruber (a parody of the old MacGyver show) as their tool of choice to perform what was essentially an advertising MacGyverism.

They took a product, Pepsi, found some stuff laying around, SNL MacGruber skits, applied an equal amount of cunning and genius and MacGyvered it into a whole new form of advertising strategy.

So cunning was this MacGyverism of advertising, that it completely fooled the majority of viewers into thinking they where watching an new MacGruber skit. But in actual fact they where having Pepsi advertised to them during a commercial break!

According this report Pepsi have indicated that they would like do more of this sort of advertising, not only with SNL, but also other shows. So it would seem that this advertising MacGyverism may become standard practice, but I hope not, because I quite like being able to tell where the show ends and the commercials begin. It makes it so much easier to plan your potty and food stops.

Play the MacGruber game on NBC.com

Posted in MacGyver on February 4, 2009 by Rockatteer

As yet further indication of the popularity of Saturday Night Live’s MacGyver parody MacGruber, NBC now have a MacGruber game on their web site.

Youy play the role of MacGrubers side-kick and must hand him the items he calls for to allow him to defuse the bomb within the 30 second countdown.

You’ll need a fast internet connection to play this game though.

Could Richard Dean Anderson guest host SNL?

Posted in MacGyver, The Universe with tags on February 4, 2009 by Rockatteer

With his recent guest spot in the 3 MacGruber Pepsi commercials, Richard Dean Anderson has been pegged by some fans a good candidate for as a guest host on Saturday Night Live.

Anderson is well know for his goofiness and wacky sense of humor, and I think he would fit right in to the SNL mix. We know he loves parody comedy, such as Mad magazine. He’s also admitted in an interview that he loves the MacGruber send up, which one would (at the risk of making an ass of both u and me) assume is why he agreed to do the spot in the first place.

I don’t know how they decide on guest hosts, but I would think RDA would meet most criteria. He’s shown in many interviews that he knows how to work a crowd with ad-lib joking and on the spot improvising, which according to some reports was pretty much his style of acting in SG:1 – they often didn’t know what his next line was going to be because he made stuff up in scene as he went – so his comedic abilities, I think, would match anyone else who has hosted the show and I think he would make a quite an entertaining guest host.

This of course all comes down to if he would actually be interested in hosting it. He may not be, we don’t know what his priorities are at the moment.
